Nitrous Oxide
N2O emissionsKroeze et al. (1999) present an estimate for global N2O emissions from 1500 to 1994. Total emissions varied from 11 Tg N in 1500, to 18 Tg N in 1990. Their analysis suggests that global natural N2O emissions have not changed much over time (around 10 Tg N). Anthropogenic nitrous oxide emissions have increased considerably from 0.6 Tg N in 1500, to 1.7 Tg N in 1990 and 8 Tg N in 1990. The natural emissions are by far the most important source category (95% in 1500, decreasing to 55% in 1990), followed by agriculture (5% in 1500 and 35% in 1990). |
