Energy Supply and Demand
The IMAGE Energy Regional Model (TIMER) is an global energy model. Its main objective is to analyse the long-term trends in energy demand and efficiency and the possible transition towards renewable energy sources.
TIMER: Model versions and documentationThe TIMER model was originally developed as a one-world model (TIME) for the TARGETS sustainable development model (Rotmans and de Vries, 1997). A model version with 17 world regions was developed (TIMER 1.0) (de Vries et al., 2001) between 1997 and 2000. The TIMER 1.0 model was applied for example to the development of some of the IPCC SRES scenarios (De Vries et al., 2000), exploration of climate policies (Van Vuuren and De Vries, 2001; Van Vuuren et al., 2003b), country-level scenario assessment and, together with IMAGE, global environmental scenario studies (UNEP, 2002; Carpenter and Pingali, 2006). More recently, improved modelling of renewable energy sources, revision of the electricity model and the development of a hydrogen sub-model has led to the TIMER 2.0 model. The TIMER 2.0 model has been recently recalibrated for 26 regions. This model version was used to explore different stabilisation strategies. TIMER can be used both as a stand-alone model, and as a model integrated within the IMAGE framework. |
