Initial land cover, urban area

Maps for contemporaneous urban area were created by first combining ‘Urban and Built-up’ from the DISCover map with the areas of ‘Artificial surfaces and associated areas’ from GLC2000 on a 5 x 5 minute resolution. The fraction of built-up area for each 0.5 by 0.5 degree grid cell in IMAGE 2.4 is calculated by dividing the number of original 5 inute cells classified as ‘urban area’ by the total number 5 minute cells included in the 0.5 by 0.5 degree cell considered.

In the land-cover model the built-up area is assumed to be unavailable for any other type of land use. The size of the built-up area is kept constant, which means that IMAGE 2.4 does not (yet) simulate changes in the size of the built-up area.
