Nature in Modern Society, Now and in the Future – a philosophers’ debate, 11 November
On 11 November 2015, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency will host a philosophers’ debate on the future of nature and nature policy in the EU.
The role of nature in our society is changing, with ‘nature for people’ and ‘people and nature’ as upcoming frames. What does this mean for nature policy on EU, national and other levels, in the long term? And how does the changing role of nature relate to other topical themes like sustainable food, healthy cities and renewable energy?
Four renowned philosophers will engage in an inspirational, thought-provoking exchange of ideas on the fundamental value of nature and its relationship with society:
- Bruno Latour, author of Politics of Nature (Bruno Latour on YouTube)
- Roger Scruton, author of Green Philosophy (Roger Scruton on YouTube)
- Wilhelm Schmid, author of Ökologische Lebenskunst (Green Art of Living)
- Annemarie Mol, author of The logic of care (Annemarie Mol on YouTube)
The debate will be moderated by Matthijs Schouten, author of Spiegel van de natuur (Mirror of nature) and presenter of NTR Academy on Dutch television.
When: 11 November 2015, 12:30 – 18:00 hrs
Where: Pakhuis de Zwijger, Piet Heinkade 179, 1019 HC Amsterdam, the Netherlands
The venue is easily accessible from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station. Lunch will be provided on arrival.
This philosophers’ debate is part of the Nature Outlook project, which aims to offer a fresh look at EU nature policy by exploring the different ways people view and value nature. Connecting to these different motivations may help to increase the engagement of citizens and businesses and to bridge the gap with other sectors, such as agriculture and energy.
