EDGAR-HYDE 1.4

Introduction

After completion of the EDGAR-HYDE 1.3 dataset for 1890-1990, EDGAR 3.2 data for 1990-1995 (1970-1995 for direct greenhouse gases) have become available with updated emissions and expanded source categories. To take account of these revised estimates for recent years, the original EDGAR-HYDE 1.3 dataset have been adjusted to the new EDGAR estimates for 1970 onwards, including new sources not included in the original 100 year dataset. Details on additions and adjustments are given below. If you use this adjusted dataset, please cite the dataset as mentioned below.

Citation: EDGAR-HYDE 1.4; Van Aardenne et al. (2001) adjusted to Olivier and Berdowki (2001).

Adjusted regional datasets 1890-1990

CO2  emissions (224Kb)
  1. Revision of CO2 from biofuels (Bnn) at 10% instead of 100% (assuming largely sustainable production)
  2. Adjustment (scaling) of the 1890-1970 dataset to match the regional 1970 emissions with EDGAR 3.2.
  3. Addition of category international transport (F57+58) for 70-95 only.
CH4  emissions (224Kb)
  1. Adjustment (scaling) of the 1890-1970 dataset to match the regional 1970 emissions with EDGAR 3.2.
  2. Addition of waste water handling (W21+22+30), scaled back to 1890 per region using the population index (cf. landfills).
  3. Addition of category international transport (F57+58) for 70-95 only.
N2O emissions (224Kb)
  1. Revision of N2O from deforestation (L41) to include post-burn effects (add 10 x direct N2O emissions).
  2.  Addition of indirect N2O emissions from agriculture (L71+75): calculate the multiplication factor compared to total direct N2O emissions from agriculture (L10+30+50+60) in 1970 per region in the EDGAR 3 data and use that factor to calculate these emissions for the 1890-1960 period.
  3. Adjustment (scaling) of the 1890-1970 dataset to match the regional 1970 emissions with EDGAR 3.2.
  4. Addition of category international transport (F57+58) for 70-95 only.

Other compounds: Not adjusted available.

Please note that no attempt was made to correct the new 1970-1980-1990 emissions for the small changes in regional definitions used in the EDGAR 2.0/EDGAR-HYDE 1.3 and EDGAR 3.2 datasets. See EDGAR-HYDE 1.3 documentation.

Biomass burning emissions (L41+L42+L43+B00) are to be considered as order-of-magnitude estimates only. They are very uncertain for recent years as included in EDGAR 3.2 (based on decadal FAO assessments for the '70s, '80s and early '90s); for the period up to 1970 these emissions have been estimated using an even more simple approach. For more information on the uncertainty in the EDGAR 3.2 data for 1970-1995 we refer to the specific  documentation provided on line.
We also note that temperate vegetation fires (L44) have not been included since they are very small compared to other sources of CH4 and N2O .
